Interesting Facts about YMUN: YMUNK 2014's Press Corps

This year marks the first year that YMUN Korea will be introducing a new committee - the Press Corps. While the Press Corps have long since held its presence in YMUN, it was only introduced to YMUN Korea this year in order to “give delegates both in the Corps and in the conference as a whole a different experience and perspective on the conference,” said Ms Miranda Melcher, the Under Secretary General for Committees. She added, “My focus as USG of Committees has been on developing the committee side of the conference, making each committee special and unique. So we decided to launch the new Press Corps style this year as part of that effort.”

Press Corps’ role would be to give students who may not enjoy being traditional delegates a way to participate meaningfully in YMUN Korea. It will also give all participants in the conference a better way of learning about what goes on during the conference, and something to enjoy reading. “Considering the success I’ve seen with similar Press Corps at other conferences, I’m not really worried about YMUN Korea’s Press Corps,” Ms Melcher said. She also praised in particular the Press Corps team that is headed by the Editor-in-Chief, Mr Jared Yeo from Yale-NUS College.

As Editor-in-Chief, Mr Yeo will be overseeing and guiding his team in producing articles regarding actual conferences, social events and ceremonies. “As the first ever Press Corps team, we have more room to try out new ideas, such as providing coverage of unmoderated caucuses discussed during committee sessions. This is something that I hope will bring more interest to our articles,” said Mr Yeo. “They will also be in the thick of the action when sitting in on committee discussions and debates. I hope that such excitement will show in their writing. My goal for Press Corps is to produce innovative pieces that can better capture the readers’ interests,” he added.

These articles will be covered in the Press Corps’ daily e-newsletters, titled ‘ROK and ROLL’. Apart from this, the Press Corps will also manage Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts to provide live updates, and produce videos of all the serious, important, and funny things that happened during the conference. All their work will be found online, for easy access for current delegates and other readers. “The Press Corps has been working hard to produce a great first issue for YMUN Korea. I am confident that the hard work put in by the Press Corps will be able to enrich the delegates’ experience in a way that would not have been possible before its introduction.”
